Tasks Overview

Everything you need to know about creating, managing, and completing tasks

What are Tasks?

Tasks are the foundation of Helm. A task represents any work item, goal, chore, or activity that needs to be completed. Tasks can be assigned to specific members, have due dates, include reward points, and track consequences for incompletion.

Key Task Features
  • Create one-time or recurring tasks
  • Assign to specific members or leave unassigned
  • Set due dates and priority levels
  • Add reward points and consequences
  • Track completion history and statistics
  • Use templates for frequently created tasks

Task Lifecycle

Tasks move through several states from creation to completion:

  1. Created (Pending)
The task is created and appears in the task list. If assigned, it appears in the assignee's inbox.
  2. In Progress
The assigned member is working on the task. They can add comments, update progress, and ask questions.
  3. Submitted for Review
The assignee marks the task as complete and submits it for review (optional workflow step).
  4. Completed
The task is marked as complete. Rewards are earned, and the task moves to the archive.
⚠ Overdue Tasks
If a task passes its due date without being completed, it's marked as overdue. Consequences (if configured) may apply, and the task appears prominently in the assignee's inbox.

Task Views

Helm provides several ways to view and organize your tasks:

All Tasks

The main task list shows all tasks in your organization. You can filter by status, assignee, priority, and date range. Sort by due date, priority, creation date, or title.

My Inbox

Your personal inbox shows:

Calendar View

See all tasks with due dates on a visual calendar. Click any date to see tasks due that day. Great for planning your week or month ahead.

Kanban Board

The Kanban board gives you a visual column layout of all tasks organised by status. Access it by clicking the More button in the task toolbar and selecting Kanban.

Columns from left to right:

Drag a card from one column to another to change its status instantly. Cards in the Overdue column display a red consequence badge (e.g. "2 consequences") when the task has pending consequences configured, making it easy to spot items that need priority attention.

A compact Kanban view also appears on The Helm dashboard as the Task Pipeline widget, giving you an at-a-glance status summary from your home screen.

Archive

Completed and archived tasks are moved here. Search and filter archived tasks to review past work, track completion trends, and restore tasks if needed.
